Running "amok" or "amuck" is a phrase originally referring to Muslim "Moros" (Moors) in the Philippines taking a weapon suddenly in a murderous rampage.  The still popular 1911 pistol (.45) was developed to stop these fierce fighters (.38 was not enough).  More on America's first jungle war here.
