A Word of Thanks to Four Black Men and A Gun « Pileus

In his much acclaimed blog article, Stanford Law Professor Marcus Cole thanks four black men, starting with his own father, for defending the right to bear arms.  More broadly, we need to thank the millions of slaves and abolitionists, without which we would not have had the Fourteenth Amendment extending Second Amendment guarantees to all Americans.

As Douglass pointed out in his autobiography, black Americans could not count on the government to protect them; they had to defend themselves against the rash of lynchings committed by the Ku Klux Klan and even state and local authorities. Citizenship, according to Douglass, rested upon three boxes: “the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box.”
